Old-Time String Band and Dance

Keeping the Barn Dance Rhythm Alive Under the Gaslight

American Rhythm Folk Ensemble LLC brings the warm sound of the old-time string band to concert halls, community halls, and schoolhouses from our home in Provo, Utah. We call squares, teach the fiddle and banjo, and keep the dance floor spinning with honest music made by hand.

The Program

Six Ways We Carry the Music

Every engagement is shaped like a line on a dance card, punched with care. From the quiet depth of a concert hall to the rollicking fun of a community square dance, each program is built for the people in the room.

Concert

Concert Hall Performances

We take the stage as a full old-time string band, mixing driving fiddle tunes with gentle ballads and crowd-pleasing waltzes. Our concert programs are carefully sequenced to tell a story about the mountains, the mill towns, and the parlor gatherings where this music was born, and every performance ends with the whole audience invited to clap along. We bring our own instruments, sound, and stage presence built through hundreds of shows.

Whether you are booking a grand hall with perfect acoustics or a warm community theater, we shape the set list to your room and your audience. We can open for another act, play a full headline evening, or deliver a condensed showcase that fits a tight program schedule, always with the same care for detail.

School

School Residencies and Workshops

We partner with schools and youth programs to bring the string band into the classroom through hands-on residencies. Students learn to hear the parts of a tune, try a bow on a real fiddle, and trace the history of the square dance across the frontier. Our teaching artists are patient, experienced, and skilled at making beginners feel brave enough to make music that very first hour.

Programs range from a single assembly to a full week of sessions or a semester elective, and we design each one around your curriculum and your students. We bring instruments for demonstration, printed materials, and lesson plans that your teachers can carry forward long after we leave.

Dance

Square Dance Calling and Community Dances

The heart of our work is the community square dance. Our caller guides every body through the figures with a clear voice and an encouraging spirit, so newcomers and old dancers move together as one room. We bring the live band, the caller, and the dance instructions, and we set the tempo to match the crowd so that everyone from age six to ninety-six can find their place on the floor.

We are glad to call a relaxed family dance, a spirited town celebration, or a full evening of squares, reels, and waltzes. We will also walk you through floor size, crowd count, and seating so that your hall is set up to bring the whole room together.

Fest

Festival Stage Programming

We are a dependable addition to any festival line-up, from county fairs to heritage music gatherings. We program sets that fit your schedule, your crowd size, and your stage, and we add community dance workshops for the audience between sets. Festivals trust us to show up early, sound great, and leave the stage looking better than we found it.

Past festival partners value the way we move a crowd and keep the energy high between headline acts. We coordinate closely with your stage manager and tech crew, and we bring whatever our own setup requires so that adding our set to the schedule costs you no extra effort.

Archive

Recording and Archival Sessions

We capture the real sound of the old-time band in faithful recording sessions, preserving both beloved standards and original compositions. Our recording work serves museums, folklore archives, and proud families who want the music of their gatherings to last. Every session is treated as a document of a living tradition, not a cold production line.

We can work in a professional studio, in a historic venue, or right in the gathering space where the music is meant to live. Our team will capture the warmth and life of the live sound and deliver finished recordings suited to archival storage or to sharing with your community.

Apprentice

Instrument Apprenticeships

For the players of the next generation, we offer guided apprenticeships in fiddle, banjo, guitar, and bass. Apprentices sit in with the band, learn to shape a tune with heart, and study the calling voice that leads a whole hall. We match quality personal attention with real performances, so that by the end, an apprentice is not just a student but a working musician.

Each apprenticeship is tailored to the age and level of the player, blending steady instruction with the chance to perform beside working musicians who care about the tradition. Whether a young player dreams of the stage or simply wants a deep, joyful relationship with an instrument, we meet them where they are and help them grow.

We believe a tune played with honest hands and a dance called with a clear voice can bring a whole room into one heartbeat. Our work is to keep the floor swinging, the instruments singing, and the old songs alive in every new ear that hears them.
